Your Chance to Run with Marathon Hero Bryony Gordon
12 May 2018, 10 a.m.
Have you ever wanted to jog alongside your running inspiration and get a hug from them on the way round too? Well, now is your chance as Bryony Gordon – one of the stars of the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon – leads a wave at the Vitality Westminster Mile on Sunday 27 May.
Author and newspaper columnist Bryony became one of the heroes of this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon when she ran the entire 26.2 miles in just her underwear along with friend Jada Sezer.
The pair wanted to show that marathon runners can come in all different shapes and sizes and to raise money for mental health charities in the process - and the response to their efforts has been overwhelming.
Bryony, who has now run the last two London Marathons for Heads Together – the campaign set up by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to change the national conversation on mental health, said: “It was incredible. The support we had, not just from the crowd but from other runners was incredible. Many runners came up to me and said ‘you are the reason I’m running here today’.”
Now Bryony, who has a new book Eat, Drink, Run: How I Got Fit Without Going Too Mad, wants to say thank you to all those who have supported her by inviting them to run with her at the Vitality Westminster Mile.
“The amount of people who have got in touch since the marathon who have said they have been inspired to run has been amazing,” she said.
“Some of these people might not necessarily want to do a marathon and this is where the Vitality Westminster Mile is great. It is a first step. You can run, walk, jog or even waddle and by waddling one mile you are starting on the path to running 26.2 miles.
“I couldn’t run for a bus when I first started running but it shows anything is possible and you can do things you think you can’t.
“The great thing about running is that quite quickly you start seeing progress. You could run one mile in May and by the end of July you could be running five miles and with that comes a real sense of achievement and body confidence.”
Bryony will be leading a wave at the Vitality Westminster Mile, which covers much of the same route as the final mile of the Virgin Money London Marathon, and is encouraging as many people as possible to sign up – with the promise of a hug to everyone who joins her!
“It’s about taking that first step and showing people of all shapes and sizes that it is do-able. It’s not about speed, it’s about getting out there and doing something.”
After her run, Bryony will be signing copies of Eat, Drink, Run: How I Got Fit Without Going Too Mad in the festival area at neighbouring Green Park.
The Vitality Westminster Mile is the world’s most iconic mile, on a spectacular route in central London that starts on The Mall and finishes in front of Buckingham Palace. It’s a great bank holiday day out for all the family with lots of free family-friendly activities during the day at the Vitality Wellness Festival in Green Park.
