Sagar Barua ran the very first Vitality Westminster Mile in 2013 and went on to encourage his family to take part as a way of getting more active.
Barua works in the sport and leisure department for event partner Westminster City Council, so he sees the value in people doing some exercise.
“I realised that this event was a perfect way of getting my friends and family involved in running too," he said. "At first I invited my parents to walk with me, and then it grew organically. Now I have my mum recruiting on my behalf!”
On Sunday 26 May, Barua will take part in the world’s most iconic mile, which starts on The Mall taking in a lap of St James’s Park and finishes outside Buckingham Palace, with more than 21 of his family and friends.
Three generations will come together on the Start Line, including Barua’s parents, Jolly (77) and Satyen (81), his partner Laura with her parents, his brother and sister, uncle and aunt, in-laws, nephews, as well as a large cohort of family friends, many of which are his parents’ age.
“Now my parents and nephews say the same thing – when is the Mile? They love the atmosphere and the festival area afterwards to try out all the free activities such as yoga and the cricket workshop," he said.
“My nephews are fiercely competitive and are now a bit more tactical in their running – in the first year they sprinted as fast as they could, but soon learnt that they needed to pace themselves a little.
“My elderly parents love the challenge of completing a mile as they’re not very active nowadays. I’m most looking forward to seeing them cross the Finish Line with arms aloft. It is such a fantastic sight to see!
“The Vitality Westminster Mile is a terrific event because it’s accessible for people of all abilities and ages – plus the atmosphere on the day is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Watching Olympians take part, the chance to run with Sir Mo Farah and then seeing the young and old taking part together – it’s amazing!”
